Running my life as a busy wife, boy mom, and business owner

What's that you say? Let's sign up for another 13.1? Okay!

Well, what do you know. In a moment of insanity, or, perhaps more accurately, stupidity, I have signed up for the Indy Half Marathon on May 5. That will be just 10 short weeks after my first half marathon, so, hopefully I survive the Princess Half and am up for the challenge again.

So why am I doing this, you may ask? Why am I committing to running another half marathon when I haven't even done the first one yet?

In short, because all my friends are doing it.

I KNOW. I KNOW. If these same friends jumped off a bridge, certainly I wouldn't follow them! I'm a teacher! I'm supposed to teach my students about not succumbing to peer pressure!  I'm supposed to teach them about making solid choices based on their sound decision making capabilities!

But seriously, A LOT of my friends are doing it! I don't necessarily try to run with other people (mostly because my pace is anything but consistent), but it's nice to know that I can be running with Teresa and Erica from Chicago, the Kanney and Beres families from La Porte, and Mr. O'Connell on my path to the finish line. There's something about that camaraderie that I wanted to experience.

So, yes, I might be nuts. But I still think it'll be worth it.

  1. You forgot your "just say no" post from a few days ago? Just kidding! Good for you. You should be able to pull it off. Make sure you take a break & rest for awhile after your 1/2 before you jump back on the horse. You will need a little recovery time. I finished my 1/2 (2 yrs ago) with 3 huge blisters & 2 black toenails, feet & legs so sore I thought "I'm never doing this again". Before the weekend was over - while still limping around the house - I was on the computer looking for my next event. My next event was a full marathon 4 months later! So, if you feel less than great after your race & swear you'll never do it again, you will. You'll run Indy & have a great time :) They say it's pretty awesome.

It's funny we were kind of having the same thoughts today. I was wondering if I did the full marathon October 20th would that give me enough time to get ready for the Goofy Challenge in January 12th/13th? I don't know the answer but I'm giving it my best shot to make it happen. Did I tell you I want those 3 medals??? hahaha

  2. I know! I knew I was crazy for doing this!

I read somewhere that you should take as many days off as miles you run (so, about two weeks after a half). That sounds GLORIOUS, but I don't want to wait too long before starting to train again. This is an addiction, I swear! I must be nuts to think I'll want to get back out there and run after 13 miles!

Are you going to do the Goofy Challenge?! What's the pace you have to keep on it? I say, DO IT! Those three medals will look so pretty hanging in your house!

  3. You'll be fine :)

I've read that too. My boss never takes that much time off after a 1/2 or a full marathon. She does rest but I think she's back at it within a week - easy runs though - no speedwork/hills. I've only done one 1/2 and one full marathon 2 years ago & I really don't remember how long I waited to run again. Search the net & you'll probably find different advice & see what works for you.

I want those 3 medals from the Goofy Challenge soooo bad! That is my goal & I'm trying to have all positive thoughts to make it a reality. But...my sister was just diagnosed with lung cancer in November. It's over $300 to sign up for the Goofy (registration isn't open yet) and they say it fills up kind of fast so you can't hold off too long to get your spot. So, my plan right now is to throw caution to the wind and sign up & hope & pray for the best :) I'm hoping to make it, finish it, get my medals & call her on the phone to tell her about it :)))

For the Goofy you need to keep a 16 minute/mile pace or they will pick you up and not let you finish. That's 4 mph so you could run and walk some if you had to. You might have to if you are very sore from the 1st race the day before.

  4. You can do it! And what a great reason to run -- in honor of your sister! I can't wait to hear about the training for THAT!

  5. Yeah, don't close your blog...I'm gonna need some major support!

Today is a rest day so I'm vegging with the grandbabies. 9 miles tomorrow will likely be on the treadmill :(

I paid my entry fee for the Geist 1/2 marathon. My spot is reserved!

Good luck with your weekend runs :)

  6. Hooray! When is the Geist 1/2? We'll continue to support each other -- I'm going to need yours too!

Today's run went well... I'm concerned I'm losing a toenail. Ick. Has that ever happened to you?

  7. The Geist 1/2 is 5-19. You'll be done with both of yours before I do mine. Glad your run went well. I changed my plans. I did my 9 miler today after the grandbabies left. 1.5 on the treadmill, couldn't take it, then went ouside for the other 7.5. I decided a long run tomorrow & speedwork on Monday was probably not a good idea. I'm also planning on switching my speedwork to the Yasso 800's I told you about.

I did have 2 black toenails after I ran my 1st 1/2 marathon. They did fall off - rather I helped them off. They will grow back :)
