Let me tell you about my day. This morning, I went to school, drank my breakfast smoothie, taught Junior Honors English, went to the bathroom, taught my newspaper class, went to lunch, GOT THE BLISTER UNDER MY TOENAIL POPPED, taught Junior Honors English, taught Journalism, met with my mentor kids, graded on my prep period, went to get coffee with Erica, graded some more, taught Jazzercise, and am now home.
Can you guess what my favorite part of the day was?
Okay, really, my favorite part of the day was coffee with E, but my SECOND favorite part was getting this black toenail taken care of! Let me back track...
While Erica is on maternity leave, our athletic trainer Caitlin is subbing in her room. This morning, I went in Parker's room to see her (and Cooper) and complain about the white hot searing pain that was my toenail. Enter Caitlin. "I can help," she said, "since that is my job!"
So, I walk in to lunch and Caitlin has a tissue and a sterilized bulletin board push pin. "Come with me," she says. I'm desperate for relief, so I do. We walk in to an open cubicle and she instructs me to sit down and put my foot on the desk. I nervously start telling a story during this process, thinking that perhaps if I focus on something, I won't feel the pain that's about to take place.
About a minute later, Caitlin announces, "You have a lot in there!" and then three seconds after that, "All done!" Wait? We started? I looked down and was quite literally astounded by what I saw.
My toe looked COMPLETELY normal! This toe, which previously was swollen, aching, and a cross between purple and black is now COMPLETELY BACK TO NORMAL.
Caitlin (who will heretofore be referred to as Caitlin the angel blister popping trainer) went back to lunch, disposed of the evidence, washed her hands, and started eating her Take 5 bar, like it was no big thing. I thought about hugging her, but I don't think we're there yet. Perhaps a nice thank you note and some candy will suffice.
My toe is normal color and much less throbby. Good day. :)
Yayyyy!!! How awesome. Keep us posted as to whether it stays on of you lose it. It sure sounded like a gonner but maybe not? Either way, decreased pain is the way to go :)
ReplyDeleteSo far, so good today! We'll see after the run tomorrow -- hopefully the nail will hang on, but at least I'm no longer in pain.
ReplyDeleteHow long are you running this weekend?
I didn't have to work today so I did my long run (10 miles). The grandbabies are staying over tonight so the long one is out of the way. So no runs this weekend. I'll be doing some rowing & Pilates.
ReplyDeleteI have a Garmin with a chest strap & foot pod that I run with. I have been seeing my heart rate hit 240 sometimes :( I'm hoping it's a glitch but to be on the safe side I'm seeing a cardiologist Thursday. He better not mess up my big pipe dream!!! If he has something to help make it happen, that's great. Just don't tell me I can't do it.
Do you run with a monitor? If so, ever have stupid stuff like mentioned above? I'm probably twice your age so you probably don't but just thought I'd throw that out there. Kind of bummed but running anyway :)
I HAVE used a monitor before. It was a few years ago and was a cheaper one, but I did hit some glitches with it! I remember a few times, it told me my heart rate was at 200, but it IS scary to see it pop up that high! If you're feeling good, I would assume it's just a glitch, but it's always better to make sure.
ReplyDeleteKeep me posted on how it goes! I'll cross my fingers!
I have an appointment with my Rheumatologist this week (I have Rheumatoid Arthritis) and I'm semi-afraid to tell her that I'm running a half marathon in four weeks. I can feel the disapproving look coming already. Eeeek!
I'll be interested to see what your doc has to say. I know for regular arthritis they say low impact exercise but I don't know if it's different for RA. I would think if it doesn't hurt you to run that it would be OK. Better to exercise & stay fit than gain added weight for your joints to haul around. Weight makes everything worse, doesn't it? So put down that peanut butter jar...lol. Just kidding :))) Do what makes you happy. That's what I'm sticking with.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad I got my long run done yesterday - the wind is wicked out there today.
Me too! She knows I run, but I haven't seen her since I decided to run the half. I'm in pretty good health right now, so I don't think she can be too mad at me, but I AM curious about her level of anger at my favorite activities. :) We'll see what happens. But, yes, moving is good and weight makes it worse and peanut butter makes EVERYTHING better!
