Clearing the clutter: The best ways to get rid of all the stuff!

Thursday, July 31, 2014

As a newly married couple, we've reached that special point in our marriage where the stuff is starting to fill every nook and cranny of our house. Actually, the stuff is on top of other stuff in every nook and cranny, so it's desperately time to clear out!

And thus, we're on a mission to rid our storage room of everything we've decided we don't want anymore. Our neighborhood is having a garage sale in August, but we won't be able to participate, so we're trying to decide if it's worth it (and if we'll get enough traffic through here) if we attempt to have one on our own. I'm not opposed to trying, as it's summer, and I'm off school, but I'm not sure where to start with advertising (does anyone (besides me) still get the newspaper?).

Lately I've been seeing lots of different "online garage sale" sites popping up on social media. The concept is simple -- you take photos of each of your items and post them, and then when someone is interested, they contact you about meeting in a public place or picking up from your house. I joined a few recently (have yet to buy or sell on there), and I'm almost shocked at some of the things people want to buy! I feel like this might be a good option to sell at least our big ticket items, but it might be labor intensive to photograph and post every small thing we're looking to purge.

Besides these garage sales, though, there are LOTS more options for getting rid of the stuff. I think it just depends on what it is that you're trying to accomplish (do you simply want the stuff gone, or do you want money for your stuff?).

Donations: There are so many great options for donations in our community (and maybe yours too). Our local Goodwill has so many stores and drop boxes around our community, it makes it a no brainer. And, our local Salvation Army will even come to you if you schedule a pick up! There's nothing easier than putting goods on the porch and waiting for someone to come grab them! There are lots of other great non-profits in the community that will happily take items (old cell phones, computer equipment, vehicles, etc.), and you can find them by doing some simple internet searching.

Resale: I see a lot of clothing items being sold on the online garage sales, but, again, it's a lot of work to photograph, inventory, and post every single clothing item you're looking to sell. Couple that with having to find someone who wants that item and is the same size... well, it's a crap shoot. While I used to just donate my clothing, I occasionally have pieces that I'd liked to sell. A few years ago, I went to Clothes Mentor to sell some of my items, and had hit or miss luck there. They bought a few of my more worn items, but didn't purchase some of my nicer, high-end items because they were more than two years old (but still VERY fashionable, mind you!). Recently, I tried the online site ThredUp, which is essentially an online resaler. You can request a bag from them which they'll ship to you for free. Then, you fill it with whatever you want (they accept clothing, shoes, and accessories for women, juniors, and children) and ship it back to them for free. They'll go through your items and bring you an offer. Whatever they don't accept can either be returned to you for $12.95 or they will donate it on to another organization. I sent in roughly ten items, just to gauge what sort of things they'd be willing to accept, and I'm curious to see what the pay out will be. I figure I'm not taking a loss, because these are probably items I would have donated anyway, so if I can get a little $$ for them, that's great! I'll keep you posted on how ThredUp turns out for me!

Community sites: Places like Craigslist and Freecycle are great for getting rid of the stuff locally. Craigslist allows you to sell or give away items for free, whereas Freecycle specifically focuses on giving away items. Both of these sites are awesome and, depending on how actively people in your area use them, your stuff might be gone pretty quickly!

Why you gotta be so rude?

Tuesday, July 29, 2014

This guy has GOT to go!
Alright, this may come as more of a rant. But here goes anyway.

What is with the rudeness lately?! Have any of you noticed this trend too? I feel like it's everywhere, and maybe that's because I've been spending more time online. I've seen crazy bouts of rudeness in every type of discussion forum I've been on! I suppose I expect this for things like news stories (I especially despise anonymous forums where names aren't attached to postings), but I literally feel like it's been all over the past few weeks! People have been attacking others on Facebook, blogs, and, today, even a recipe I was contemplating for dinner had a seriously rude comment from someone who supposedly made it and didn't like it. Is that necessary?!

Is it no longer acceptable for people to share their opinions without the rude factor? I understand that not everyone is going to agree on any given topic, whether that's a news story or a recipe or what have you. My issue is the way in which that opinion is shared. I just don't think that belittling or attacking others is necessary in order to simply say, "Hey, we don't agree, but that's okay." When did the anonymous internet attacks on people we've probably never even met become a thing? Because I want zero part of that.

A few weeks ago, there was an awesome gratefulness/positive kick going on via Facebook. I saw so many awesome posts from people who were looking at what was great in their lives. Since then, I've seen at least a few posts about people who have been faced with rudeness, unsavory treatment in situations, and even personal attacks over the smallest, simplest things. It makes me angry to see great people who are just trying to do their best and live their lives getting put down, belittled, and treated with rudeness.

So, I guess what I'm saying is, before you attack others with a rude 'tude, try empathy, kindness, and actual communication. I feel like we can make the world such a happier place if we all just try a little!

Stitch Fix Saturday! Fix #6!

Saturday, July 26, 2014

I feel like it's been forever since I've gotten a Stitch Fix shipment, but really, it's only been about two months. Must mean it was time!

If you haven't heard of Stitch Fix yet, let me tell you a little about it! Basically, Stitch Fix is a subscription service. You fill it out a detailed style profile about  your sizes, style preferences, and budget. After that, they'll send you five clothing or accessory pieces for you to try on in the comfort of your own home. This is awesome, because you can pair it with your own clothing and accessories to see what might work well in your closet! Each Fix costs $20, but that fee is credited toward anything you decide to keep. When you've decided what you don't want, you drop it in the prepaid mailing envelope, stick it in any mailbox, and send it back to the company. You only get charged for what you keep, and you can get Fixes as often or as infrequently as you'd like. Shipping is free both ways.

AND, if someone signs up through your referral link, you get a $25 credit to use toward your next purchase! Not a bad deal, huh?

I love using this service because it gets me outside my comfort zone and allows me to try things I normally wouldn't! You can check out my other Stitch Fix reviews here:

And that brings us to today's Fix. I didn't give any sort of specifications to my stylist, Tan, but I'd been adding lots of pieces I loved to my Pinterest Fashion board (there's a link in your Stitch Fix profile so that they can see what you like!)! Tan did a great job pulling picks for me this Fix!

1. Pomelo Moni Stud Detailed 3/4 Sleeve Blouse, $58
2. Kut from the Kloth Lonnie Distressed Cuffed Boyfriend Shorts, $68

I LOVE this studded detail top, and had actually pinned a few of them (it comes in various colors and patterns). The fit is perfect, and I love that I can dress it up or down for work or a night out. This top was a definite KEEP for me! The shorts... oh, the shorts. These shorts fit me like a glove! Seriously, perfect fit, and that never happens with jean shorts! But, they were a little too distressed for me, and the price point was a little bit high, so they were returned, but begrudgingly

3. Skies are Blue Lizellen Cut Out Detail & Scallop Hem Top, $48

I'd been pinning tons of scallop detail items on my Pinterest board lately, and was so excited when I saw one was coming my way. Unfortunately, this just didn't quite cut it. :/ The top was too big and too boxy. I could have maybe forgiven the boxiness if it had fit a little closer to the body, but it just made me feel super square. Back to Stitch Fix it went!

4. Sanctuary Alcina Abstract Printed Spaghetti Strap Maxi Dress, $74

This was actually the husband's favorite item in the whole box. The maxi was beautiful, plenty long, and had a fun pattern I haven't really seen elsewhere. I like the spaghetti strap details, and if I had somewhere to wear this dress right now, I'd be all over it! But for $74, I don't want it just to sit in the closet. So, it sadly went back too.

5. 41Hawthorn Clementine Lace Detail Chiffon Dress, $78
The jewel-toned color of this dress made me love it instantly, but, the lace at the top wouldn't sit right, and it seemed just slightly large all over. I wasn't sure this was something I would get enough use out of. So, it went back too!

So, in the end, I kept one great top that will be perfect for the upcoming school year! I scheduled another Fix for September and asked for some specific things: jewel toned pieces and things I can wear to work. Very excited to see what Tan can do with my specifications this time around!

Think you're ready to give Stitch Fix a try? I would love it if you used my referral link! Hope you're having a wonderful weekend!

Craft day! How to make a Yarn Wrapped Wreath!

Wednesday, July 23, 2014

I love a good craft project! But I'm not always motivated to complete projects on my own. So, I'm thrilled that my friend Erica is a crafter too! It's nice to have a buddy to work with and talk to while we let our creativity do its thing.

On today's agenda were some classroom crafts for Erica and a front door wreath for me. I'd seen an awesome Pinterest tutorial on making a yarn-wrapped wreath, and I've seen a few lately while driving through various neighborhoods. Our front door is plain ol' white, so any time I can spruce it up with some color, I'm all for it!

For today's project, I picked up the following supplies from Michael's:
-Foam Wreath (you could use other materials too -- straw, styrofoam, etc.)
-Spray Adhesive (I used the Krylon brand)
-Yarn (any kind, but consider the weight because if it's thinner, you'll be wrapping a while!)
-Embellishments of your choosing (I chose two large felt flowers and a letter P)
-Hot glue gun (for embellishments)
-Scissors
-Ribbon for hanging wreath
Tada! Supplies!
Once you've gathered supplies, it's time to get started!

First, start by spraying a small amount of adhesive on the wreath. Begin by wrapping the yarn tightly so it stays in place as you start to work. As you move away from the adhesive, though, you can start to space out your string (you're going to wrap around the wreath 3-4 times anyway, so you'll have a chance to fill in the gaps later!)!
Wreath after round one of wrapping!
Continue wrapping the wreath, occasionally spraying a little adhesive as you go. You do NOT need to use a lot of adhesive -- a little dab will do you! As you wrap, make sure the yarn is pulled tight to the wreath to avoid major bumps and lumps.
Wreath after round two of wrapping!
Continue onward until you're satisfied with how the wreath looks. I ended up going around four times just to fill in some of the larger holes. To be honest, there are still a few holes, but no one will see it from far away (and they probably won't notice it up close either!)!
Finally finished wrapping!
When you finish, make a knot on the back side of the wreath (decide at this point which side looks best, and use the other side as the back! Then, make the knot through a piece of yarn already wrapped around the wreath.). You may want to add a little adhesive spray to make sure it doesn't wiggle around too much.

Next, decide how you want to embellish your wreath. I wanted to do the flowers and the P on the opposite side of wreath, and in hindsight, I think I want to get another flower so that there's an odd number on the left hand side. At this point, I switched to the hot glue gun so that I could better control where my glue was going.

Hello, wreath!
Choose a ribbon you love and wrap it around the top of the wreath. And wallah!
And on the door! (Clearly, I need to center it a bit!)
What do you think?! In total, the wreath took about 3 hours to make. Luckily, we had good tunes and good conversation so there was never any boredom!

And now, I need a new craft. Any suggestions for me?

Working on my fitness: Workouts for busy people!

Monday, July 21, 2014

Today, my new Jazzercise set arrived in my mailbox. I always love this set the best because it's the one I can spend the most time with being that it's summer vacation and I have more free time than usual! But, it got me thinking about all those days during the school year when it feels like there just isn't time to work out.

I've always been one to work out on the days I have time. But sometimes, I fail to make the time. My wise friend (and Jazzercise of LaPorte center owner) Janet once reminded me that a one hour workout is only 4% of my day. When I look at it that way, it's hard for me to justify not working out, even if that means getting up earlier or skipping a little relaxation time at night.

I LOVE using Pinterest for quick and easy workouts. There's such a great variety on there, and it's a great place to save workouts I want to try later. Here are just a few I'm loving for those days when I'm busy!

1. This PopSugar 7-minute HIIT workout video is awesome! And it's only seven minutes long! We can all find seven minutes in our days!

2. Spark People offers a 6-minute body weight circuit workout that can be done anywhere! Perfect for those who want to tone and tighten but don't want to invest a lot of time on a given day!

3. PopSugar (my favorite workout site!) has a great 20-minute Flat Belly workout that intertwines cardio and strength into a great little circuit workout. Check it out below!

Whatever you're doing, try to do a little each day. Once it becomes a part of your routine, it's hard to stay away from it! I tried to stick to indoor workouts this week as it's getting TOASTY here in the Midwest! Hope you're staying nice and cool today!

Fashionista Friday: Meet Courtney of Courtney Bock Designs!

Friday, July 18, 2014

I'm so excited today to tell you about Courtney Schultz of Courtney Bock Designs. CBD is my new favorite obsession, and I'm constantly perusing the website to see all the awesome items Courtney offers. From monogrammed clothing to personalized housewares to the cutest baby items you'll ever see, Courtney's products are completely unique, super high quality, and totally fabulous. She's a Saint Mary's grad, and I'm always a fan of Belles doing awesome things! Plus, she's a real-live person who sometimes struggles to balance work and home and kiddos, and I love that she's not afraid to own it!

Read on to find out more about Courtney and Courtney Bock Designs!

Angela: Tell me a little bit about you and your family.
Courtney: My name is actually Courtney Schultz (not Courtney Bock!), and I have two sweet sons named Navy and Knox and a very awesome husband, Stockton, who is a huge supporter of Courtney Bock Designs. Stockton and I were married in 2010, Navy was born at the end of 2011, and Knox joined the party in 2013. We live in Northern Indiana and love our community, the people, and the spirit of our city.

A: Where did the idea for CBD first come from? And when?
C: When I was in college, my mom owned a local boutique called Orange Tree. I worked for her as her manager and loved the energy and pace of the boutique retail industry. I started sewing during that time and began making baby gifts (bibs, burp cloths, blankets, etc.) to sell in my mom's shop. It evolved over time until I needed a website of my own for my handmade creations. With the volume of sales going up and my interest in the personalization sector of the industry growing, I began to carry other lines specializing in monograms and personalization and now CBD is a complete boutique of personalized gifts for all walks of life!

A: What did you originally want to accomplish when you started CBD?
C: I had no idea! I just diligently made blankets, burp cloths, and aprons until it led me to another idea. One idea turned into another and the business had changed completely! I suppose in hindsight I envisioned always sewing my own goods - I think my dreams were too small at that time!

A: How has the company changed over the years?
C: I no longer sew anything from scratch due to time constraints, but I sell some of the top lines in the personalization industry and I'm so proud to be a retailer of such fine goods. I formerly didn't have the capacity to personalize ANYTHING and now we can personalize nearly EVERYTHING! We do all of our embroidery and vinyl application in-house, which is a good way for us to keep our creative juices flowing, and we are continuing to expand a wholesale collection for other retailers interested in the CBD brand.

A: Why do you think customers are drawn to your products?
C: I've said it before and I'll say it a thousand more times... people love anything with their name on it. It immediately makes a gift more special. If you can give someone a gift that was specifically personalized for them, they feel emotionally connected to the gift AND the giver. It keeps people coming back for more!

A: What are some of your best selling items?
C: This season, the Tiny Monogram Necklace has been our biggest seller by far! The Scallop Monogram Shorts have been a great item for bridal parties, and our new baby bedding collection has been very well received! People continue to give great feedback on the quality and outcome of their custom orders, which keeps us inspired to continue!

A: What does this business mean to you?
C: Aside from my faith and my family, this business is next in line. I love it! I love my customers, I love the products, I love the challenge (and oh, believe me, there are some challenges!), and I love the satisfaction I get out of doing what I love for a living. It is fulfilling in ways I cannot explain.

A: Moving forward, what are your dreams and goals for CBD?
C: We are actively working on expanding our wholesale presence and providing a complete collection of CBD original pieces that can be sold in other stores. Among the items that we will offer will be an exclusive collection of our "SaturdayTees" with custom-designed phrases and sayings (we haven't even formally announced this yet, so you're the first people to know!!). I think the tees will be a huge hit. Additionally, we just aim to increase our web presence and continue to grow our national presence. Maybe someday when my children are grown, I'll finally be able to have a brick and mortar, but until then, we want to do the very best we can with the fabulous online community we get to call our customers.

A: What is best part about your job? And what's the worst?
C: The best part is meeting new people and seeing them share the CBD love! Whenever I see a stranger in a CBD gift, I think my heart bursts inside my chest! Or better yet, when I glance at our new customers online and see people from all over the country who have no local connection whatsoever, it absolutely thrills me to know that this tiny seed of a dream has grown enough that it possesses a national presence. The worst part? Figuring out how to manage home/work balance with my kiddos! It's too easy to reply to an email or fulfill an order while I should be engaging with my kids, and sometimes it seems overwhelming to find that place of balance. Deep breathing and lots of grace can be found in and around our working/living quarters. :)

Do you not just love this lady? She's adorable!

Here's what you need to do. Head over to the Courtney Bock Designs Facebook page and Like it! Courtney often shows new products that are going to be featured on the website soon AND she does frequent giveaways that you'll definitely want to be a part of! Then, click on over to Courtney Bock Design's website and spend some time checking out all the awesomeness there!

And lastly, sign up to follow my blog by email, because I'll be having periodic giveaways of fabulous CBD products! Free personalized awesome products?! Everybody wins!

Thoughts on my tenth (!!!) year of teaching

Thursday, July 17, 2014

My new high school classroom theme: Scrabble....... Love this idea! Can use it too with Social Studies vocab!
Bring on the Scrabble theme!

My friend Erica and her son Levi came over today for a cool weather walk and some lunch. We had a great chat about all sorts of things, but both of us kept commenting on how we can't believe school starts in just one short month (from tomorrow!). This summer has been incredible so far, and I'm glad we still have another month to enjoy before we give it up.

And then I started thinking about how this will be my TENTH year of teaching! How has it been TEN YEARS since I started teaching? It's honestly a little unreal to me.

I'm so excited for this school year for so many reasons. And I LOVE that I'm still excited about my job!

My newspaper staff is going to be outstanding! We accomplished so much last year in the digital and social media realms, and I know there are wonderful things coming down the pipeline for us this year too. It's going to take a lot of hard work to elevate our content, but I know these kids are ready for it!

My juniors are going to have a challenging and awesome year ahead of them, and I'm going to have a challenging and awesome time planning some new lessons for them. We're getting new textbooks any day now, and I can't wait to really get into the content and see what sorts of things I'm going to open their eyes too!

I've been spending a lot of time looking around the web trying to find new ideas for my classroom, and I think I've found a few I'm really set on.

1. Scrabble theme! I really want to tie this in to my classroom this year! I think it would be fun to do Scrabble boards around our different units. Now, to find an awesome computer generated Scrabble board template so that I don't have to hand make all these letters!

2. Promoting my classroom library. I have a lot of books in my classroom that just sit on the shelves! They're there so that students can check them out and read them for fun, but it's rarely taken advantage of. I think I need to do more with promoting and highlighting the books for my students -- maybe by doing some sort of "speed dating" with each of them so they know what sorts of things are there for them to use.

3. Using more literature circles. My junior class is two trimesters, and in the second trimester, students read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Great Gatsby. During the first trimester, though, students are supposed to read two American literature novels on their own. It's been a struggle for years for me to find a great way to really check to see if students are reading. This year, I think I'll choose five books and have students do literature circles to discuss. I think this will also really set them up for success when it comes time to read and discuss our large group reads.

4. eHow's Erica Green gives some great ideas for First Day of School Activities are awesome! She has a great idea about partnering students up using celebrity pairings, and I think that would be so fun! She also has a great idea about using Jeopardy to review classroom procedures and activities. I think it would be a fun way to get students involved on day one.

So, while I'm glad there's still some summer left, I feel good that I have a solid plan to start back with!

That's all for now! (P.S. I skipped making my wreath today, but may try to start on it tomorrow! I need to make one more trip to Michael's though, so we'll see!)

Tuesday tip: In which I write about productivity

Tuesday, July 15, 2014

Seriously, can we get a key for this?!
According to the Facebook statuses of my dearest friends and coworkers, I don't seem to be the only one struggling with productivity this summer. It comes in waves -- I'll have two or three days where I really buckle down and get some things organized, and then there will be a whole week where I couldn't tell you what I've done with my time (but clearly, nothing productive has taken place!)!

So when my coworker Monica posted this awesome blog from Be more with less, I knew I'd found a winner. The blog focuses on 25 Ways to Simplify Your Life in Ten Minutes or Less. Ten minutes? Sold!

I decided to spend ten minutes in our junk room (yes, we have a junk room (which we also call our office)) this morning. This poor room became the catch all for anything wedding related, work related, computer related, junk mail related, and junk in general related. It was a sad state of affairs. But, after spending 40 minutes working on it, we can actually walk in the room now! I'm totally kicking myself for not taking before and after photos. I'd only intended to spend ten minutes working on it, but I got on a roll and couldn't stop! (To be fair, it helped that Dan has recently moved both of our giant bookshelves out of there, so there was actually room to organize things!)

And this week is finally going to be the week I work on our front door wreath! I've been wanting to make a wreath for our front door since I took down my Christmas ornament wreath, but was waiting for some inspiration to strike! I've seen some adorable yarn and felt wreaths on Etsy, and I think I'm finally ready to tackle making one! Just a few more supplies, and we'll be off and running! Can't wait for craft day Thursday!

Before!

Here's hoping you too are having a productive week! :)

Friday's favorite things!

Friday, July 11, 2014

Friday, how I love thee! Is there anything better than a beautiful Friday morning? I think not! I started the morning bright and early teaching a 5:30 a.m. Jazzercise class. We had a huge crowd today, and everyone was working so hard! It was awesome!
Mix
I love summer because it gives me time to reflect and discover new favorite things. This summer hasn't disappointed. So, in no particular order, here are a few of my new favorite things!

1. Cereal: Okay, this is not a new discovery for me. But, it's been, like, years since I've gone on a cereal kick. And now I can't stop! It reminds me of when I was in college and pretty much made a bowl of cereal part of each meal. Oh how I miss the days of the Saint Mary's dining hall with my favorite ladies!

2. Ladies of London: I've never really gotten into the Real Housewives shows, but I recently discovered Ladies of London on Bravo, and I can't stop watching! The show focuses on a small group of women living in London (some originate from there, the others are Americans who've moved there). I've suddenly become all invested in these women and their lives! Why? I don't know. But I love it.

3. Online window shopping: Dan and I are busy putting together our home, and we've decided to revamp our large family room to make it more user friendly. We've been talking about getting a chaise lounge sofa, so I've been spending parts of my days checking out our options. And naturally, once you start looking at sofas, you have to start looking at coordinating coffee tables, pillows, wall art, throws... you get the point. It's been so fun to look, but I'm nervous about making a furniture commitment. I think we're leaning toward this color of gray, though!

4. Naps: Okay, again, this is nothing new, but boy do I love me a great summer nap with the windows open (thanks, mild summer!)!

5. Mixology on Netflix: Did anyone watch this when it was on ABC this year? I totally missed it, but Dan and I just finished the season on Netflix and LOVED it! The show focuses on five men and five women and one night where they all meet in a bar. The writing is hilarious and witty, and I loved that each episode was only 21 minutes so there wasn't a giant time commitment.

What are YOU loving today?

Summer reading: Books and more books!

Tuesday, July 8, 2014

I pretty much adore all things summer. But what I really mostly adore about summer is having quite a bit of extra time to read. Summer is the one time of the year where I can sit down and really get lost in a book without worrying about all the other things I need to be doing.

Me Before You, Jojo Moyes
If you read one book this summer, make it this one. I absolutely LOVED this book! The story focuses on eccentric Louisa who finds herself out of her long time job. She takes a new job as caretaker for Will Traynor, a quadriplegic who's struggling to accept his new life. What starts as a job turns into a mission for Louisa. This is a book I will absolutely pick up and read again. Go get it! Read it now!

Here I Go Again, Jen Lancaster
I've loved Jen Lancaster's writing style for years. She's written some hilarious nonfiction about her life, and this was the first piece of her fiction I read. It was a cute book (perfect for honeymoon reading!). It reminded me of a similar plot to the movie 13 Going On 30. Cutesy and fun.

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me (and Other Concerns), Mindy Kaling
Mindy Kaling's book has been on my to-read list for years. And I'm thrilled that I got the chance to read it this summer! Seriously, laugh out loud funny. This book is perfect for a beach vacation or a rainy day indoors. Read it, relate, and laugh out loud too.

Fangirl, Rainbow Rowell
This YA novel follows the life of Cath as she heads off to college and continues writing her fanfiction for Simon Snow (a very Harry Potter-esque character). The plotline is cute and relatable for high school readers. It was cute, but not my favorite YA book.

Still on the To-Read list for me are Jennifer Weiner's All Fall Down, Emily Giffin's The One and Only, Stephen King's 11/22/63, and Paula McLain's The Paris Wife.

What are you reading this summer? Any must-reads I should add to my list.
