Running my life as a busy wife, boy mom, and business owner

Wants and needs

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

Hello, warm snap! Lovely to see you! I'm planning to take full advantage of the next two days of 70+ degrees. Who doesn't love some warmth in the midst of fall?

Yesterday I got home from work and I was itching to run. This is something that hasn't happened for me in a long time. I wanted to run. I forgot how awesome it feels to want to put my feet to the pavement.

So, I went tearing through the subdivision for two whole miles before I had to leave for Jazzercise class. It wasn't the long, slow run I was craving, but it was a nice little jaunt nonetheless.

While I was running, though, I got to thinking about wants and needs. There are many, many days where I feel like I need to do things. I need to go to work. I need to clean the house. I need to pay bills. I need to eat healthy things. I need to drink caffeine. I need to buy shoes. Okay, that's a lie. I want to buy shoes.

It's funny when we feel like we need to do things. I don't know about you, but a lot of the time, the things I feel like I need to do, I don't actually have to do at all. But, there's always that pressure to get things knocked off the checklist.

I feel like I'm in a much better place when I want to do things. I want to go to work. I want to clean the house. I want to eat healthy things. I want to pay bills. (Okay, that last one was another lie). I want to go for a run.

Today after work, I didn't want to go for a run. So, instead, I went to get a pedicure to make my running feet pretty and then decided to park it on the couch. And for once, I've decided that's okay. It's okay to want to not push myself 24/7. And it's really nice to be finally learning that.

  1. I'm glad you got your feet "prettied" & got to relax :)

Guess what? I had a black toenail in May from running a 1/2 marathon & could never get rid of that junky nail. After the full marathon last weekend the same toenail got jacked up again & I am happy to say ... it is gone! Only another runner who has been through this could fully understand...lol!

Any races you are signed up for?

  2. Hooray for losing the nail! Isn't that terrible when we would rather lose it then have it on there looking disgusting? And, just in time for close-toed shoes!

I'm not signed up for any races right now. :( I'm trying to decide what to do. I really wanted to do Disney again, but it's an investment, and I have two other major trips planned in the spring (Germany in April and The Outer Banks in May), so I'm nervous to add another trip (and all those expenses!) on to it. I want to look for a half around here to do maybe in March-ish time, but I haven't started looking yet. Motivation is lacking, so I need to get something on the calendar!

How are you feeling about Goofy?! I'm so excited for you!

  3. I was soooo sick of that nail I was considering making a doc appointment to have it removed. Now it's gone, free of charge with a little stubbornness & gritting of the teeth! You might know I went all summer with that ugly thing while wearing sandals and now I manage to pull it off.

Keep us posted when you decide your next feat. Sounds like your travel plans are full but I'm sure you can find something close that won't break the bank.

Monday after the race I was still waddling around work. I didn't go upstairs to the lunchroom until Wednesday due to killer sore thighs. Now that I'm walking normal I'm starting to get excited about Disney! And scared! And psychotic! I keep fighting with myself over signing up for the 5K that weekend as well or not. You get another medal for that with the classic Disney characters on it (which is really cool). I keep trying to let it go but I keep thinking this is probably a once in a lifetime opportunity for me so I really hate to pass it up...oh my...what to do???

How long were you in the coral at the Princess before the race started? From what I hear it sounds like a long wait.

  4. That's definitely the plan -- something close by that won't break the bank! I'm itching to get signed up though, after my good run yesterday!

I LOVE your passion and ambition for getting the bling! I agree that the 5K might be tough, but, then again, you only live once! ;)

I was in the last corral (H) for the Princess. The race started at 5:45 and I didn't take off until close to 6:25! Plus, we had to be in our corrals WAY early (I want to say by 5? So, it was awhile. But I had fun talking with the people around me!

  5. I think being signed up for a race keeps the motivation going.

My psychotic side won - I signed up for the 5K to add to my Goofy Challenge! You are right, you only live once and this is my dream I'm chasing! Ummm, you also only die once - I hope I don't expire at Disney...lol

I thought I had heard it was 1-2 hours in the coral. That won't be fun. And let me guess, no portapotties near there?

  6. Totally agree!

I also hope you don't expire at Disney! You can do it -- think of all that bling!

The portapotties are actually pretty well spaced through the walk to your holding space. :) Disney does do a good job of that, so not too bad. :) The wait was definitely not my favorite part, but I think my nerves kept me entertained enough!
